Does whitening toothpaste work?
Whitening toothpaste has boomed in popularity over the last few years.
From coffee addicts to ex-smokers, virtually everyone wants to whiten their teeth – and swapping out normal toothpaste for a whitening version is one of the easiest options available. There are so many affordable products to choose from, all claiming to brighten your smile. The question is, do any of them actually work?
Here at Icy Bear Dental – as a leading dental whitening cosmetic brand – we say yes. Whitening toothpaste does work. But you should be very careful about which product you buy. Here’s why.
Not all whitening toothpastes are made equal
Whitening toothpaste can be separated into three main categories, depending on the ingredients from which they’re made. These categories include:
1. Toothpaste with bleaching agents
Lots of whitening toothpastes rely on a peroxide – such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide – to perform the whitening action. These ‘bleaching agents’ work by breaking down stains and lifting the colour off the outer layers of enamel.
The problem is, they usually require longer than 2 minutes of contact for them to work. Such toothpastes are unlikely to have a high enough concentration of peroxide for them to have a quick or lasting effect. What’s more, the ingredients used can cause irritation and sensitivity for some people.
2. Toothpaste containing blue covarine
Other whitening toothpastes rely on a chemical, called blue covarine, to do the job. This chemical adheres to the surface of the enamel, where it creates a sort of optical illusion – making the teeth appear less yellow (even though, technically, they’re not!).
The results of this type of toothpaste can usually be seen straight away. But they don’t tend to last very long. And once the product is no longer being used, the whitening effects are likely to reduce or disappear entirely.
3. Toothpaste with abrasives
All toothpastes include some sort of mild abrasive – such as baking soda, silica or dicalcium phosphate – as it helps to remove plaque. But, to facilitate the whitening effect, many whitening products will contain a higher level of these abrasive particles than average.
Essentially, these particles are designed to buff away any surface stains (e.g. caused by tea, coffee, red wine etc.) and can successfully improve the appearance of your teeth. But due to their harsh and abrasive nature, they can also wear down the enamel of your teeth – and, in the long-term, such damage can lead to sensitivity and tooth decay.
So, what’s the solution?
Which type should you buy? In our opinion, the answer is… none of them.
Perhaps you could accuse us of being biased. But, as a unique and revolutionary product, we believe that Icy Bear Diamond Dust is the best whitening toothpaste currently available. Not only can it successfully restore your sparkly white smile, it isn’t blighted with any of the disadvantages typically associated with this kind of toothpaste. For example:
- Icy Bear contains micro-particles of diamond, known as diamond dust. Unlike the abrasives typically found in whitening products, these particles don’t cause any damage. They gently polish the teeth and remove stains, without wearing down the enamel.
- It’s free from harmful chemicals (such as peroxide and sodium lauryl sulphate) and uses natural enzymes to clean each tooth softly and evenly. Therefore, it doesn’t cause sensitivity, irritation or discomfort.
- Thanks to its high concentration of fluoride (1450pmm), it provides all-round care for your teeth. Icy Bear Diamond Dust can be used day-to-day instead of your normal toothpaste. Just apply a pea-sized amount, brush twice daily, and you’ll start to see and feel the results in no time.
